Web design  ·  Hastings, Victoria

Your next customer is sizing you up right now.

They have your name, a phone in their hand and about eight seconds. What they find in those eight seconds decides whether they ring you or the next bloke on the list. I build the website that gets you the call, then I keep it running — one monthly fee, every change included.

An illustration — but this is the whole competition

What they find

Most of the job is won or lost before the phone ever rings.

By the time somebody is searching, they have already decided they need the work done. All that is left is choosing who does it — and that gets decided on a phone screen, quickly, on whatever turns up.

Nothing at all

Your name goes in and nothing comes back out. You are not losing the job to a better tradie — you were never in the running.

A Facebook page

Last post was two years ago. No prices, no service area, no way to tell whether you are still trading. They keep scrolling.

A site from 2014

They have to pinch to zoom. The text is tiny, the form goes nowhere. It does not read as "old" — it reads as "sloppy".

None of that has anything to do with how good you are at the work. That is the part that gets under my skin.

The deal

Two plans. One monthly fee. No surprise bills.

You see your finished site before you pay a cent. After that, one monthly fee covers your site, your enquiries and every change you ask for.

Site

$99/month
+ $990 setup
Prices ex GST
  • Up to five pages, designed and written for you
  • Built for the phone first, because that is where they are
  • Local search set up so you turn up for your suburbs
  • Google Business Profile created or cleaned up
  • Enquiry form landing straight in your inbox
  • All hosting fees and the security certificate, covered
  • Changes whenever you ask: words, photos, prices, hours, services
  • A preview of every change before it goes live
  • Backups and a full history of every change

Night Shift

$249/month
+ $1,990 setup
Prices ex GST
  • Everything in Site
  • An enquiry form that asks the questions you need to quote
  • An app on your phone where every enquiry lands
  • Automatic follow-ups, so nobody goes cold while you are on the tools

For businesses that live on enquiries. Already on Site? Pay the $1,000 setup difference and move up.

One monthly fee, no surprise bills. Hosting, security and everyday changes are all in it. The only other costs are your domain name (roughly $20–40 a year, registered in your name) and new pages or features, which I quote before I start. 12-month minimum, then month to month.

The catch — there isn't one

I will design your website before you pay me anything.

Not a stock template with your logo dropped on top. Your actual site — your services, your suburbs, your words — designed and written so you can look at the real thing and know exactly what you would be buying.

I would rather show you than tell you.

01

You tell me about the business

Fifteen minutes on the phone, or I come to you. What you do, where you work, the jobs you want more of.

15 minutes
02

I build the mockup

Real design, real copy, your business. Costs you nothing and there is no deposit.

About a week
03

You have a look and decide

If it is right, we go ahead. If it is not, we part as mates and you owe me nothing.

Your call

What stays yours

Your name. Your customers. Your business.

The monthly fee pays me to run and look after your website. It does not mean I own your business. Plenty of web people hold the domain and the customer list, and the day you want to leave you find out you are leaving empty-handed. Not here.

How it works here

  • Your domain is registered to you, not to me
  • Your words, photos and logo are yours
  • Every enquiry is yours, exported whenever you ask
  • Leave after the first 12 months with 30 days' notice, and take a copy of your site
  • Or buy the site outright for $990 and host it yourself

You should be able to leave on a Tuesday and still have your name, your content and your customers on Wednesday.

Proof

Have a look at what I build.

I am early on with Hitting the Mark, so rather than pad this page with logos I have not earned, everything here is labelled for exactly what it is: a live site I built, or a concept made to show what is possible.

● Live site

Pro Racing — Hastings

A racing and golf simulator venue with a licensed bar on High Street, Hastings. I built the site and I run the business behind it, so I know what it is like to need the phone to ring. Bookings, event packages, race nights and a food and drinks menu, all on Squarespace 7.1.

How it runs, start to finish

Five steps. Two of them are yours.

01

We talk

What you do, where you work, who you want ringing you, and what you are sick of explaining twice.

15 minutes
02

I mock it up

The real design with the real words. No cost, no deposit, no obligation.

About a week
03

You decide

Yes and we go. No and that is the end of it — you keep the mockup either way.

Your call
04

I build it

Photos, pages, forms, domain, Google. You see the finished site before anyone else does.

1–2 weeks
05

I look after it

It goes live and I keep it running. Text or email me a change, you get a preview link, and it goes live once you say yes.

Every month

Who you would be dealing with

Local, and easy to get hold of.

I am Mark. I live and work in Hastings, I run Pro Racing on High Street, and I built and run that website myself.

Hitting the Mark came out of doing exactly that. I kept looking up local businesses I actually wanted to hire and half of them were impossible to find, or looked like they had shut down years ago. Good operators, invisible online. That is a fixable problem and it does not need to cost five grand.

More about me

The obvious questions

Ask me the hard one first.

Why a monthly fee instead of a one-off price?

Because a website is not finished the day it goes live. Prices change, you add a service, you want new photos up. The monthly fee covers hosting and every one of those changes, so you never get a bill for a five-minute edit and you never have to learn how to do it yourself.

What is Night Shift?

The plan for businesses that live on enquiries. Your website asks the questions you would normally have to ring back and ask, every enquiry lands in an app on your phone, and the follow-ups go out on their own so nobody goes cold while you are on the tools.

I already have a website. Is it worth redoing?

Maybe not. Send me the link and I will tell you straight. If it just needs a tidy-up and better Google setup, I will say so rather than talk you into a rebuild.

Do I need to know anything technical?

No. Text or email me what you want changed. I make the change, send you a preview link, and it goes live once you say yes.

Is there anything else to pay?

Your domain name, roughly $20–40 a year, which stays registered in your name. New pages or features get quoted before I start. Hosting, security and everyday changes are all in the monthly fee.

Can I leave?

Yes. There is a 12-month minimum, then it is month to month with 30 days' notice. Your domain, content and enquiries are yours either way, and you get a copy of your site when you go. If you would rather own the code outright, it is $990.

How long does the whole thing take?

About a week to get the mockup in front of you, then one to two weeks to build it once you say go. Most of the waiting is on photos.

Where do you work?

Hastings, Somerville, Bittern, Tyabb, Crib Point, Mornington and the rest of the Mornington Peninsula. I am happy to come to you — it is usually easier than trying to describe a business over the phone.

Can it take bookings and payments?

Yes. Tell me how you take them now and I will work out the simplest way to plug them in. If selling online is the main job, I will build you a proper shop on Shopify, because a real shop needs a real checkout.

What if I go quiet halfway through?

Then nothing happens and it costs you nothing. I do not chase, I do not invoice for a mockup, and I do not put you on a mailing list.

Next step

Let's see what yours could look like.

Free mockup. No deposit, no obligation, no follow-up phone calls you did not ask for. Worst case, you get a free design out of it.

The work

Live sites, and honest concepts.

I would rather show you two honest things than twenty logos I have no right to. Everything on this page is labelled: Live site means it is out there working, Concept means I built it to show what is possible, not for a paying client.

● Live site

Pro Racing — Hastings

Twelve motion racing simulators, four golf bays and a licensed bar on High Street. The site has to do real work: sell function packages, fill race nights, take bookings from people standing on the footpath outside. I designed it, wrote it, built it, and I run the business behind it.

A comparison of two versions of the same lawn-care website. Before: a 2013 build with a narrow column of small serif text, an underlined text menu, a placeholder gallery and a "last updated 2013" footer. ◇ Concept

The same gardener, thirteen years apart

Drag the handle. On the left is the kind of site a good operator is still running in 2026 — cramped, dated, no service area, no prices, a contact form that goes to an inbox nobody checks. On the right is the same business with the same phone number, rebuilt so somebody standing in their front yard can find it, read it and ring it.

Honest note: Coastline Mowing is not a real business. I built both sides to show the difference, not to claim a client I do not have.

Not "from". Not a discovery call before I will tell you a number. Pick the plan that suits, and you do not pay a cent until you have seen your website designed and written. The setup fee is half on approval, half at launch.

Where the plans stop.

When it costs more

An online shop with real stock. A booking system that has to talk to your calendar. More than about five pages of genuine content. I will quote it properly rather than pretend it fits a plan.

When I will talk you out of it

If your current site is basically fine and just needs its Google listing fixed, I will tell you that and charge you nothing for saying so. A rebuild you do not need is a waste of your money.

What I will not do

Hold your domain, keep your customers' details, charge you for a five-minute edit, or bill you for a mockup you decided against.

Why the price is public. Every other website quote on the Peninsula seems to start with a meeting. You should be able to work out whether you can afford this in about four seconds, from your phone, without giving anybody your email address.

About

I'm Mark, and I'm in Hastings.

I run Pro Racing on High Street — twelve racing simulators, four golf bays and a bar. I designed and built that website myself, and I still run it, which means I have had the experience of watching a website either bring people through the door or fail to.

Hitting the Mark started because of what I kept noticing on the other side of that. I would go looking for a local business I actually wanted to hire — a gardener, a mobile mechanic, someone to fix a fence — and half the time I could not find them at all. No website. A Facebook page last touched in 2023. A site built by somebody's nephew a decade ago that will not load properly on a phone. Good operators, doing good work, completely invisible to the person holding the phone.

That is not a talent problem or a marketing problem. It is a fortnight's work and a fair monthly fee, and nobody local was offering it at a price a sole trader would say yes to without a meeting first.

The short version.

What I am

One person, on the Peninsula, who will answer his own phone and tell you what something costs before you have to ask twice.

What I am not

An agency. There is no account manager, no onboarding portal, no discovery workshop. There is me, a design, and a price.

Where I am up to

Early. I am building a portfolio, which is exactly why the price is what it is and why I will design your site before you pay for it. You are getting the version of me that has something to prove.

What happens next

I ring you back, we talk for about fifteen minutes, and roughly a week later you get a link to your website — designed, written and ready to look at. Then you decide. That is the whole process and there is nothing to sign before it.

Prefer to just ring? Do that. Most people would rather have a two-minute conversation than fill in a form, and I would rather answer the phone than read one.
